“CrossSIS” - Cross-border Spatial Information Systems with High Added Value
General description of the project
Spatial data and statistics often end at the administrative borders of regions or countries. Up to now, it is very difficult to find spatial data of two countries within one single map. But very often neighbouring regions are working on similar or related themes that could be of help in decision making and continuity of this spatial data would be of great benefit to stakeholders from a global, national, regional, local or corporate level. So why can we not make spatial data available and interoperable; irrelevantly of whether there is an administrative boundary in the designated area?
This is the question that participants of seven regions coming from four countries are working on in this project. The aim is to show how spatial data is used in their different regions and to develop an implementation strategy for setting up cross-border Spatial Data Infrastructure (SDI) or Spatial Information System (SIS) services. They intend to improve the use of spatial data in order to facilitate its cross-border utilisation. Such information can for example be important for road-planning, nature development or for emergency services across the border. These visualisations can thus be used as a basis for decision-making processes in cross-border regions. Furthermore spatial data can contribute to a modernisation of regional administrations; also in light of e-government initiatives.
