The South Aegean Region is situated in the south-eastern border of Greece. It is an island region, made up of 48 inhabited islands, 31 uninhabited islands and a number of rocky islets. The total population is 301,745 residents, inhabiting an area of 5,286 km2. The region, whose administrative capital is the island of Syros, is divided in 2 prefectures, the Prefecture of the Cyclades islands and the Prefecture of the Dodecanese islands. The local economy is directed to the tertiary sector and particularly to tourist services. The natural and cultivated environment of our region combined with the beneficial climate, are creating the basic condition for the development of the main and decisive activity, which is tourism.

Most-developed islands, such as Syros, Rhodes, Mykonos, Santorini and Kos are characterized by strong tourist activity, not only on a regional but also on national, as well as European level, which leads to increasing environmental pressures and a high demographic growth and concentration. Some less-developed islands, such as Karpathos, Folegandros and Amorgos maintain a level of economic evolvement below the country’s average and are characterized by continuous reduction of their population and lack of infrastructures and resources.
