Almost 18 Mio. people live in North Rhine-Westphalia, inhabiting an area of 34,000 km2. Once characterised by the coal and steel industries, North Rhine-Westphalia is today an important media location with the densest multimedia network in Europe. The economy is now characterized by telecommunications, transport, bio and genetic engineering technology as well as environmental and highly efficient energy technologies and a highly developed service sector.
North Rhine-Westphalia shares with its Belgian and Dutch partners
a national border covering approx. 500 km. Consequently cross-border
cooperation is of high priority to the Land. The implementation of
the INTERREG Community Initiative, strand A, at the Belgian-Dutch-German borders
serves as a model for the whole of Europe in terms of genuine cross-border
programme, projects as well as administrative and financial management.
