Euroregion Nemunas was established in 1997. This is the first Euroregion established in Lithuania. It covers border regions of the Republics of Lithuania (regions of Alytus, Marijampole and Vilnius), Poland (regions of Suwalki, Bialystok), Belarus (Grodno region) and the Kaliningrad region (eastern part of this region). The total population of the Euroregion Nemunas is 4,842,300 residents, inhabiting an area of 89,085 km2.

Several municipalities established the public association Nemunas Euroregion Marijampole Bureau in 1998, in order to co-ordinate activities of the Euroregion Nemunas. The Lithuanian part of Euroregion Nemunas is situated in the south-east of Lithuania. The location of the regions at the external borders of the European Union and the developed network of transport infrastructure and business relations in the east allows the Euroregion to have a considerable advantage when joining the development of a united Europe. The economy of the region (Lithuanian side) is characterised by the developed logistics, industrial branches of textiles, food, building materials, furniture and the production of devices. Agriculture has a significant role in the region as well.
