Lubelskie Region is situated in the south-eastern Poland. It covers the area of 25,155 km². The whole voivodship is inhabited by 2,192,000 people.
Taking advantage of unusually favourable soil-climatic conditions Lubelskie Region now is ranked among the most important agricultural regions of Poland, producing high quality cereals, dairy products, meat, fruits and vegetables. It is also one of the most important academic centres in Poland with 5 high schools and several private colleges. Furthermore, today the capital of Lubelskie Region - Lublin - with more than 70,000 students, is the youngest city in Poland. Every fifth inhabitant of the city is a student and over 40% of all the people living here have not exceeded the age of 35! The European Collegiums of the Polish-Ukrainian Universities, established in 2000 in Lublin, combines the idea of academic and trans-border co-operation centre in the eastern part of Poland.
The east of the Lubelskie Region constitutes the border with Ukraine and Belarus which at the same time is the official border of the European Union. It creates new challenges for the Region. The trans-border community named Euroregion Bug - comprising Lubelskie Voivodship, the Brest Oblast in Belarus and the Volyn Oblast in Ukraine (the region of Lviv still aspires to be included in the community) - established 10 years ago as a result of cooperation of the three neighbouring regions, has been conducting its activities on the area of approximately 80,000 km² inhabited by 5 million inhabitants. It undertakes numerous actions aiming at improving the contacts among the regions and their inhabitants, initiates the joint organisation of cultural, social and economic events, such as trade fairs, exhibitions, commercial missions. The financial resources to be used for financing certain actions carried out by Euroregion Bug are obtained from the European Union within the framework of the regional cooperation programmes.
