About 455,000 (2003) people live in both half-cantons (split cantons) of Basel (Basle City and Basle Campaign.) inhabiting an area of 555 km². The regional economy is based on a worldwide known pharmacological-industry, insurance companies, a highly developed service sector as well as important banking and transportation sectors.
This region of Basel in northwestern Switzerland shares with its German and French neighbours a national border covering approx. 55 km. Consequently regional and cross-border cooperation is of high priority to the region of Basle and is a positive example of what being European is all about.
